Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock for the Wii was, despite being a port, one of the most pivotal experiences of my 3D art career. Through my time spent optimizing the levels, characters, lighting and effects I learned a lifetime of lessons in optimization practices that have served me throughout the entirety of my career.
I was responsible for down-rezzing, recreating, and optimizing every facet of the game, including geometry, lighting, and effects, for the purposes of running it on the Wii. As a rhythm-based game, maintaining a solid framerate was mandatory, moreso than usual. Our experience on the Wii was unique in terms to lighting as well, due to differing mandates for strobe and epilepsy. We completely redid the lightshows from scratch, opting to make the optimized levels and characters we created look as good as possible, rather than trying to simply copy the original game's lighting. Overall I believe it served to give us a unique and colorful experience on the Wii.
